Natacha Atlas' Other Career Achievements
In addition to her success as a musician fusing traditional Arabic music with Western styles such as drum 'n' bass, hip hop and reggae, Natacha Atlas has done many things to help promote world peace and cultural understanding.
Early career
Before her successful solo career began, Natacha Atlas worked as a belly dancer and sang in a Belgian salsa band. After that gig ended, she collaborated with Jah Wobble on his LP "Rising Above Bedlam" and with Transglobal Underground.
Let us make peace, we are brothers
Since her father is of Moroccan, Egyptian and Palestinian ancestry while her mother is English, Atlas has long believed in the importance of tolerance among people of different cultures. Reflecting her own diverse heritage, much of Natacha's music has called for peace between Jews and Muslims in the Middle East. In 2001, Atlas served as a Goodwill Ambassador to the controversial United Nations Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa.
Express yourself
Natacha Atlas also has her own blog in which she has expressed support for the Egyptian uprising in 2011 that overthrew the corrupt, oppressive government of Hosni Mubarak. On her official blog at http://natachaatlasofficial.blogspot.com, Natacha wrote, "I would dearly love to see all of the world's impoverished people rise up against the corruption and the thieves posing as governments because more than three quarters of the world are suffering because of a relatively few elite blood sucking bastards are grabbing more than their fair share."
Drawing from a tapestry of cultural influences that reflects and transcends her own diverse ancestry, Natacha Atlas is a musical peace symbol, promoting tolerance and understanding among the cultures of the world.
